Is Your Manager Practicing Toxic Positivity?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Let’s talk about bosses and managers in today’s fast-paced demanding work environment. They have a big role to play in shaping the overall vibe and culture of the workplace. One thing that’s been getting a lot of attention lately is the concept of positivity. But have you ever wondered if your boss is practicing toxic positivity? And if so, what does that even mean?

Toxic positivity is when someone always tries to stay positive and ignores or avoids dealing with negative emotions and experiences. You know those phrases like “Just stay positive!” or “It could be worse!”? Well, they might seem harmless, but they can actually make people feel like their own feelings and experiences don’t matter. It can create a culture where employees feel like they have to hide their true emotions just to fit in.

Well, it takes some careful observation and understanding of their behaviour. Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Brushing off employee concerns or complaints
  • Ignoring or not addressing negative feedback
  • Putting too much emphasis on being positive at the expense of being genuine
  • Responding insensitively to difficult situations

When your boss practices toxic positivity, it can really take a toll on your wellbeing. It can make you feel like your genuine emotions don’t matter and that you’re not being heard. It creates an atmosphere where expressing concerns or negative emotions is frowned upon. And it can erode trust and transparency within the team. Not to mention, it can lead to burnout and emotional exhaustion.

Dealing with toxic positivity in leadership requires a delicate balance. It’s important to maintain a positive outlook, but it’s also crucial to acknowledge and address difficult emotions. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Encourage open communication and honest feedback
  • Create a safe space where people can express a range of emotions
  • Lead by example and show vulnerability and authenticity
  • Consider seeking professional development or coaching to improve emotional intelligence

Now, let’s talk about how  managers and leaders can encourage healthy positivity in the workplace. It’s all about finding that balance between acknowledging both positive and negative emotions. Here are some ways to promote a genuinely positive work environment:

  • Foster open communication where people feel safe to express their concerns and feelings without fear of being dismissed or punished.
  • Show empathy and actively listen to your employees’ experiences and challenges.
  • Provide real support for those facing difficulties, whether it’s offering resources, flexible work arrangements, or access to mental health services.
  • Celebrate wins, but also treat failures as learning opportunities. This balanced approach can help build resilience and foster continuous improvement.

In conclusion, as employees, it’s important for us to recognise and address toxic positivity in leadership. By promoting genuine emotions, open communication, and empathy, bosses can create a work culture that values authenticity and emotional well-being. Remember, positivity should never come at the expense of real human experiences and emotions.
